Those who have studied both the Bible and the modern Arabs will quickly recognize that in many instances there is a striking similarity between the customs and traditions displayed by both. This is especially true where marriage is concerned. Indeed, understanding the Arab customs concerning marriage will illuminate and clarify many biblical references concerning marriage. This paper will focus on modern Arab marriage customs and similar marriage customs that existed in biblical times. With the encroachment of western habits and ideals upon the Middle East, slight but noticeable reformations in what for centuries has been “the way of life” are occurring. Marriage customs are not immune to this change. Therefore, in order to avoid any distortions that might come from the use of present day research, I have chosen to obtain my information from sources that would be least affected by westernization. These sources include travelers and anthropologists who wrote in the latter parts of last century and the earlier parts of this century before the great influx of western influence upon the Middle East. For the most part, marriage customs throughout the Middle East are similar.

One incident, however, in particular stands out with vastly different dates and different theories as to how that day was calculated. The Exodus of the Israelites under Moses is, arguably, the most debated topic on the Old Testament timeline. As will be seen, two primary camps exist within this debate. One claims a High Date of ca. The second camp clings to a Low Date, ca.
Thus the Old Testament timeline one studies and reads about is primarily defined by when that particular author believes the Exodus to have occurred, among other factors.
Most notably, in Exodus , G-d says that the Children of Israel will be “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” that is, a goy kadosh. Because Jews have had so many bad experiences with anti-Semitic non-Jews over the centuries, the term “goy” has taken on some negative connotations, but in general the term is no more insulting than the.
Jezebel was the great-aunt of Elissar Dido another princess of Tyre and Queen of Carthage , who actually founded Carthage and its Phoenician Punic dominions. Carthage became later a great center of the western Mediterranean in its high-noon. One of its most famous sons was Hannibal who defied Rome. For more than two thousand years, Jezebel has been saddled with a reputation as the bad girl of the Bible, the wickedest of women. This ancient queen has been denounced as a murderer, prostitute and enemy of God, and her name has been adopted for lingerie lines and World War II missiles alike.
But just how depraved was Jezebel? In recent years, scholars have tried to reclaim the shadowy female figures whose tales are often only partially told in the Bible. Rehabilitating Jezebel’s stained reputation is an arduous task, however, for she is a difficult woman to like. She is not a heroic fighter like Deborah, a devoted sister like Miriam or a cherished wife like Ruth. Jezebel cannot even be compared with the Bible’s other bad girls ‘Potiphar’s wife and Delilah’for no good comes from Jezebel’s deeds.

Lemos Marriage in ancient Israel was very different from marriage today. Although there is a great deal we do not know about Israelite marriage, the biblical texts that speak about it tell us that many Israelite marriage customs were unlike those of modern western societies. First, although girls were expected to be virgins when they got married—and according to Deut It is hard to know how common polygamy, which entailed a husband being married to more than one woman, really was in ancient Israel.
Also, the evidence suggests that compared to women, men had more control over whom they married. For example, Samson chooses his own wife in Judg 14 , even though his parents disapprove of the match. Most likely, girls were married around puberty whereas men were somewhat older. Though unions were generally based more on economic or social considerations than romantic ones, some texts, including the Song of Songs, show us that ideas of passion and sexual love were also present in ancient Israel.
In order to marry a girl, a man would give her father a gift called mohar in Hebrew that would seal the betrothal between the bride- and husband-to-be.

According to the Bible, Israel is the name given by God to Jacob. The modern country of Israel includes two distinct nationalities, the Palestinian and the Jewish. Each nationality is inextricable from its religious identity. The Palestinians are Arabs whose traditions are founded in Muslim culture; the Jews define their culture in large part around their religion as well.
Each group identifies as part of a larger, international religious and cultural community, and each has a history in the region that goes back to ancient times. Its total area is 8, square miles 20, square kilometers , slightly smaller than New Jersey.
Customs and traditions according to the Bible and the way God looks at things can be partly or even completely made up of man-made things, so that these traditions and customs have little importance in the things of God.

With the new winds blowing in the Middle East, high hopes are placed on the outcome of the peace talks presently being held at various levels with some of Israel’s most bitter foes in the past, including Lebanon , the Palestinian Authority and Syria. The results of these talks will have a decisive influence, not only on the political life of the country, but also on its cultural development. The first task facing the young state, once its physical security had been assured, was to confront the existing educational system and build a structure that would make one Israeli people out of the multi-stranded population that made up this new state.
Many mistakes were made in the process. It took a great deal of time and often bitter experience to realize that the aim was not a “melting pot,” to use the concept that was then current, but rather a blend in which every individual could proudly maintain his or her cultural heritage within a receptive society that ensured room for everyone, while still forging a homogenous cultural identity – a bouillabaisse of individual flavors that would combine into a harmonious whole.
